A new debate is brewing in Tunisia regarding Article 27 of the draft Constitution stating that women’s rights should be protected “under the principal of complementarity at the heart of the family and as man’s associate in the development of the country.” Needless to say, many women are not happy with the language:
“I am distraught and worried. Women are not given rights as individuals, only in reference to men. We will bring all possible pressure. We are not ready to accept this,” said Samla Hajri of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women, a longstanding women’s rights organization.Source of quotation: Tunisia Live
