Best Article of the Year? Israel's Fading Democracy


Avraham Burg, a former speaker of the Israeli Knesset, wrote an article on the New York Times that should be taught in Egypt’s schools (I know I’m dreaming). The article is brutally honest, objective and shows that, like in any other country in the world, there are good and bad Israelis (I feel stupid for stating the obvious). I'm not aware of an Egyptian politician or writer capable of similar intellectual honesty like that shared by Mr. Burg (A decade ago I had hopes in the utterly disappointing Alaa Aswany). It’s a shame that Egyptian and Middle Eastern liberals are not building bridges (yes, meeting and talking) with fellow liberals in Israel to move the peace process forward, instead of having the debate dominated by radicals and conservatives on both side.
