The World Bank (full report here) warns of the
potential costs of dealing with an ever-growing flood of garbage as world cities
currently generate around 1.3 billion tons of municipal waste management a
year, nearly half of which comes from OECD countries. The problem with the map
many countries do not fully report their garbage so the picture could be smellier
in developing countries. Also, countries like Switzerland and Norway appear as
some of the top offenders in the map but they produce "compost" and
recycle a lot (i.e., damage almost mitigated).
